Refactor auth for better readability

**Feature request**
It would be great to have compression for api.

**Use case**
Many users need this functionality for production deployments.

**Implementation idea**
Add a new config option `enable_compression` with default `false`.

The issue gives no file or test location. Start by locating the API configuration entry point and the request/response handling, then trace how configuration options are documented and tested. Done means the new enable_compression option defaults to false and API compression behavior is covered by appropriate tests.
