Description

Is there an existing way to order files in a group such that they are sorted without file extensions?

I think it makes more sense to use the file extensions only as a fallback when two files have the same filename.

Research direction

No file or test is named in the issue. Locate the code that orders files within groups and any existing sorting tests, then check how filenames and extensions are compared. Done means files are ordered by name without extensions, with extensions used only when base names match.
