Notifications: orange dot disappears after tapping bell, despite unread notifications

Expected behavior

I expected the orange/green dot icon to always show when there are unread notifications.

Actual behavior

The orange/green dot icon disappears after tapping on the notifications tab, even if there are unread notifications.

Steps to reproduce the behavior

1. Make a comment or like a post of yours, from another account.
2. Note that you see the orange dot over the bell icon
3. Tap the bell icon, but don't tap the new notification - leave it unread.
4. Navigate elsewhere in the app, background the app, close and re-open the app.
5. Note that the orange dot still doesn't appear.

Although you have unread notifications, you can forget about them because you briefly saw the notifications screen.

I kind of like that the orange dot disappears initially when I tap on Notifications - its a small indicator that I have successfully tapped on Notifications and am reading them.
But once I've navigated away from Notifications, I'd like to still know that I have unread notifications.

The Android behavior for this is quite nice: the icon disappears, but reappears anytime I background, re-open the app, or navigate away from views with the navbar in them.

Tested on iPhone 12 mini, iOS 15.7, WPiOS 20.9

Start by reproducing the notification-dot behavior using the steps in the issue on the iOS Notifications tab, including backgrounding and reopening the app. Trace the bell indicator state before and after viewing an unread notification, then verify that the dot returns when navigating away while unread notifications remain.
