Description

Expected behavior

After changing my profile image experimentally, I really wanted to "undo" it and go back to my previous profile photo.

Actual behavior

There is no "undo" option, and the previous profile photo doesn't exist in the Media Library.

I was only able to revert my change (and needed to go to web browser to do so) because I happen to know how Gravatar works. I was initially afraid I'd lost my profile photo (which I've had for years) forever and would have to try to fish it up from some old backup drive.

Steps to reproduce the behavior
  1. Head to My Site > Me
  2. Tap the profile image or "change photo"
  3. Choose a new profile image (save your current one somewhere if you want to switch back!)
  4. Note you cannot go back to your previous profile image, browse old profile images, or find them in the Media Library.

Suggestions:

  • Store a copy of profile images in Media Library
  • Give access to images from Gravatar
  • Provide an "undo" button

Access to Gravatar images (while changing profile image) might be the most useful solution here, and most aligned with how profile images actually work.

Tested on Samsung Galaxy S21, Android 12, JP Android 21.1-rc-3

Research direction

Start at the My Site > Me profile-image and change-photo flow described in the issue, then trace how profile images relate to Gravatar and the Media Library. Done means a user can recover or browse a previous profile image after changing it, without relying on the web browser.
