Research direction

Reproduce the invalid-token flow by disconnecting WordPress Android from the WordPress.com connected applications page, then opening Account Settings and other functions. Trace the self-hosted invalid-token dialog handling and compare it with the related WP.com fix in WordPress-FluxC-Android pull request #1461. Done means the dialog appears once and settings remain usable.
