Describe the solution you'd like?
In a terminal environment, I expect this to always work the same as Esc. When a completion menu is open, I type Ctrl-[ rather than the escape key (a habit leftover from the dark days of macbooks not having a physical escape key).
In a similar vein, I expect Ctrl-I to work the same as Tab, and Ctrl-M to work as Enter, but they don't. I don't rely on these as much as Ctrl-[, but I do expect them to work like they do in other terminals. This is important for folks who have keyboards where certain keys are less accessible (e.g., a 42-key keyboard where Enter is typed as a key chord).
