Inline elements break cursive shaping

Description
This issue is applicable to text in all cursive scripts.
When dealing with cursive scripts, attempts to surround one character in a word with a span and apply CSS to colour it may break the cursive joins. (See the results of trying to colour individual letters in the following illustrations — as expected above, unsuccessful below.)
