Description

I am using standalone ESXi server and trying to set custom values using setCustomValue() but unable to set due to following error:

(pdb) vm.setCustomValue(key="remotedisplay.vnc.port", value="7601")
*** vmodl.RuntimeFault: (vmodl.RuntimeFault) {
   dynamicType = <unset>,
   dynamicProperty = (vmodl.DynamicProperty) [],
   msg = '',
   faultCause = <unset>,
   faultMessage = (vmodl.LocalizableMessage) []

Using pysphere, I am able to set this value to given VM.

Research direction

Start by reproducing the failure on a standalone ESXi server with the setCustomValue() call shown in the issue. Compare the behavior with pysphere and inspect the relevant pyvmomi API binding entry point; done means identifying why the custom value fails and documenting or fixing the behavior with a verified test.
