Issue
Hi there!
I have this annoying issue for some time now, where Hyper is showing me a notification to update even my version is a higher major. Although might be an issue with the fact that I'm on a beta release.

There seems to be multiple issues that have been "fixed" and "closed": #2282 and #2678

Research direction
Reproduce the update notification in vanilla Hyper.app using the reported Hyper 3.0.0-canary.8 setup on Ubuntu 18.10, and compare it with the available release version. Done means Hyper does not prompt for an update when the installed major version is higher, including beta releases.
