Description

Try this:

echo > a
dd if=a bs=1 skip=2

The gnu dd output error message follow by the progress information:

dd: a: cannot skip to specified offset
0+0 records in
0+0 records out

The uutils dd lacks the error message.

Research direction

Start by running the reported echo > a and dd if=a bs=1 skip=2 reproduction, then trace the dd implementation's handling of skips beyond the input file. Compare its output with GNU dd and add the missing error message while preserving the progress information shown in the report.
