is usb passthrough expected to work on a macbook?

Description
I did a lot of work to set this up expecting positive results, but no such luck.
Specifically, I have a usb security device plugged into a usb hub, plugged into a macbook pro.
Eventually I saw an AI post that said usb passthrough with qemu on a mac is considered unusable, is this true?
