Description

Please browse the existing issues and filter by 'enhancement' to make sure this has not already been suggested!

Support for real nested virtualization is basically impossible unless you are using an M2 for ARM virtualization. However, a solution via emulating the nested virtual machine is possible. A user pointed out that it would be unbearably slow on M1, but the upgrades of later and future M-series chips in addition to the highered specs of high-end Macs could make it faster. The M2 chip supports nested virtualization already for ARM.

Research direction

Start by reviewing existing UTM issues filtered by “enhancement” and the project’s virtualization and emulation entry points; no specific files or tests are named. Determine the scope and feasibility of emulating nested x86 virtualization, including how completion and performance should be evaluated.
