Research direction

The issue is a broad feature list covering vertical text, composite fonts, East-Asian line breaking, ruby, kumimoji, and warichu. No files, tests, or entry points are named, so begin by identifying the relevant layout and text-processing subsystems before proposing scope. Done should be defined as separate, tested support for the agreed subset of features.
