Description
Would be nice to have:
- number active sessions
- number free sessions
Don't need to tie this to any implementation but it would be good for clients to be able to expose this information however these see fit (e.g., prometheus).

Research direction
The issue names no file, test, or entry point. Start by locating the connection-pool API and determine how active and free session counts can be exposed without tying the interface to one implementation; done means clients can access both statistics for uses such as Prometheus.
