Description

This would allow getting rid of the tempfile dependency in the test framework, remove unsafe code for pipe2 and replace a couple of UnixStream::pair() with io::pipe().

Research direction

Start by locating the test-framework uses of the tempfile dependency, the unsafe pipe2 code, and the UnixStream::pair() calls mentioned in the issue. Check the MSRV configuration and Rust version support first, then run the relevant test suite; done means those uses are replaced with std::io::pipe while the tests still pass.
