Problem you are trying to solve

Currently the split mode does work in portrait mode but is generally not useful on smaller devices.

Suggested solution

It would be nice to have an option to split vertically when in portrait mode. K9 could then show the message list at the top and the message body at the bottom. This would be great for smart phone size devices.

Research direction

Start by locating the existing split-mode implementation and the code that determines its layout in portrait orientation. Confirm how the message list and message body are positioned on smaller devices, then verify that portrait mode can place the list above the body without regressing other orientations.
