One-Time Mobile Donation Appeal

🎯 The objective

Thunderbird is entirely supported by donations. We currently give users a way to donate through the app, but want to remind the user once they could support us via donations. Using the rate of donations that work for our desktop users, design an appeal for the Android app that asks users if they wish to donate to the project to keep us funded.

🦮 Rules of the Road

Goal is to increase donations by informing users who may not know that we are a donation-based project with a one-time popup.

🟢 In Scope

• One-time popup as to not annoy our users, just inform them we need help building Thunderbird
• Existing users will see the popup as it currently exists
• New users will see the popup after 30 minutes of active use, which takes 2-3 days to reach, on average
• New popup should not conflict with the old one, and should not display repeatedly for users who have already seen it, only for new users
• Popup will also come in a K-9 variation
• Google Play builds will use the in-app donation through Google Play that we've already established
• FOSS build distributed through F-Droid will use existing Fundraise Up platform

🔴 Out of Scope

• This will not involve substantial UI changes, but may include small changes to the existing dialog so new users get the updated one
• No dedicated website, use existing requests
• No remotely triggered appeals, this will be a 1-time request

🚧 Technical and/or Business Requirements

• We will have to ensure we have a robust system in place to ensure users see this only once. No one wants frequent popups
• We'll have to ensure that we monitor bug reports to ensure we're not mistakenly sending users more than one alert
• We have to make sure it's easy to dismiss the popup both with a dismissal button and the back button
