Description

### What are you trying to do?

I'm located in Israel and work for an Israeli company with some servers located in Israel, all available through Tailscale. Sometimes a direct connection can't be established to them, and so a relayed connection through your DERP servers is established. The problem is that the closest DERP server to Israel appears to be in Frankfurt or Paris (depends on the specific ISP). Because connection to Paris/Frankfurt appears to be about 70-80ms for each side, the connection to server are about ~150ms round robin (both sides need to be relayed of course).

That means that for a connection to a server that should be no more then 10 ms (and I'm really exaggerating here), I have about 150ms latency.

It used to be hard to place remote servers in Israel as global cloud services weren't directly available here, but since a month ago Google Cloud is available in Israel (me-west1), and AWS should exist in the upcoming year as far as I know.
I hope it will help with the deployment of such DERP servers, leading to a better service in Israel and the whole area.
Hope it makes sense :)

### How should we solve this?

Add an official DERP server in Israel, I guess.

### What is the impact of not solving this?

I should either live with the fact that we have a latency of 150ms+ to servers located no more then a few kilometers from me, or try and configure private DERP server and pay some money for Cloud services for that + someone to maintain that for no real apparent reason...

### Anything else?

I believe this is not a critical "feature" in your list of priorities, but this would surely be appreciated. I believe that it would provide more reasons for Israeli companies/individuals join the the service.

Best regards for your best team!

Research direction

The issue names no files, tests, or entry points. Begin by reviewing how existing official DERP servers are deployed and how clients select the nearest region, then assess whether an Israel deployment using Google Cloud or AWS is feasible. Done means defining the deployment, operational ownership, and region-selection changes needed for an official Israeli DERP server.
