Description

Stan itself is licensed under the BSD license. Would it be possible to release rstan under the BSD license as well?

I ask because pystan inherited some code from rstan, and is therefore GPL.

If rstand was licensed as BSD, pystan could also be licensed as BSD.

Thanks a lot!

Research direction

Start by reading Stan's linked LICENSE.md and reviewing rstan's current licensing terms and the code provenance described in the issue. Determine whether rstan can adopt BSD and what project-wide licensing changes or approvals would be required; done means the licensing question has a documented, accepted resolution.
