Description

Bug Report

I use the external ceph cluster feature: https://rook.io/docs/rook/latest-release/CRDs/Cluster/external-cluster/external-cluster/ to connect my talos cluster to an external ceph.

It works all fine (rbd and cephfs) for this config:

sudo python3 create-external-cluster-resources.py \
  --namespace rook-ceph \
  --format bash \
  --rbd-data-pool-name        rbd-prod \
  --cephfs-filesystem-name    cephfs \
  --cephfs-metadata-pool-name cephfs-metadata \
  --cephfs-data-pool-name     cephfs-data \
  --subvolume-group           prod \
  --k8s-cluster-name          rook-ceph-prod \
  --restricted-auth-permission true \

  --ceph-conf  /tmp/ceph.conf \
  --keyring    /tmp/keyring \
  --output /tmp/rook-export-env-prod.sh

With that I can successfully create in talos rbd and cephfs pvc.

But when I add the --v2-port-enable \ to it (so that only encrypted communication is allowed) then I get the error (only for cephfs, rbd also works with v2):

So the provisioning and attachement in cephfs for the pvc to the pod was succcessfull, but the mounting not:
FATAL: Module ceph not found in directory ...

The mds server is up:

sudo microceph.ceph mds metadata t-Virtual-Machine
{
    "addr": "[v2:192.168.178.80:6800/1780088979,v1:192.168.178.80:6801/1780088979]",
    "arch": "x86_64",
...

sudo microceph.ceph mds stat
cephfs:1 {0=t-Virtual-Machine=up:active}

and connection works:
nc -zv 192.168.178.80 6800
Connection to 192.168.178.80 6800 port [tcp/*] succeeded!
t@t-Virtual-Machine:~$ nc -zv 192.168.178.80 6801
Connection to 192.168.178.80 6801 port [tcp/*] succeeded!

rbd, no encryption: provisioning and mounting works in talos
cephfs, no encryption: provisioning and mounting works in talos
rbd, encryption V2: provisioning and mounting works in talos
cephfs, encryption V2: provisioning and mounting does not works in talos

Why is only cephfs with V2 encryption not mounting in talos. The cephfs module is there. Is a newer one needed?

Research direction

Start by reproducing the external Ceph setup with create-external-cluster-resources.py using --v2-port-enable, then compare the working RBD path with the failing CephFS mount. Inspect the reported Talos dmesg messages and kubelet FailedMount output, especially the V1_BANNER socket closures and missing ceph module message. Done means identifying whether the failure belongs in the Talos CephFS path or the documentation and recording a verified resolution.
