Description
Running unit tests with -race enabled has errors. We should have been running our tests with -race before but we weren't internally.
I've disabled it temporarily in our workflow to get them running but we need to fix this.

Research direction
Start by running the unit tests with Go's -race option and inspect the race reports. Review the workflow where race detection was temporarily disabled, then trace each reported failure to the affected code. Done means the unit tests pass with -race enabled and the workflow no longer needs the temporary disablement.
