Research direction
Start with the supplied docker-compose.yml, especially the postgresql and gitlab services and their DB_* environment variables; run docker-compose up and inspect the PostgreSQL and GitLab container output. Compare the configured credentials with the existing PostgreSQL volume and document the confirmed cause or required configuration change. Done means GitLab authenticates to PostgreSQL successfully.
