Possible to compile for `aarch64-apple-darwin` on `x... | rust-openssl/rust-openssl

When I try to cross compile a Rust project that has OpenSSL on x86_64-apple-darwin for a aarch64-apple-darwin target naturally it fails because it needs the libs on the system compiled for aarch64.

Is this possible to get working? How should I go about it?

Start with the openssl-sys 0.9.87 build output and the target-specific environment variables listed in the report, then investigate how cross-compilation for aarch64-apple-darwin is expected to find OpenSSL and configure pkg-config. Done means establishing a supported configuration or documenting that this target combination is not supported.
