Description
This is a revival of https://github.com/rust-lang-nursery/rustup.rs/issues/885.
It would be great if toolchain could install from dist packages. Although it's possible to unpack the dist file and link the toolchain, the user must choose a local to unpack the dist file and cannot update the toolchain using rustup. If the user downloads a new stable version of the dist package, rustup could allow him to update the stable toolchain running rustup toolchain install stable....tar.gz.

Research direction
Start at the rustup toolchain install command and trace how it accepts local inputs. Check how distribution package archives are identified and how an installed stable toolchain is updated. Done means rustup can install a dist package through the illustrated .tar.gz command and update that toolchain later.
