rustc won't compile after error

I was going through the online Rust book and I was modifying the provided code examples to see the types of error messages I could receive.

I tried to compile with this code

Based on the error hint, I changed the code to:

Not sure what's going on here. I just created a new project with cargo and moved on, but I would like to know how to fix this in the future.

Reproduce the report with a new Cargo project on x86_64-pc-windows-msvc using rustc 1.84.0 and the shown read_line change. Start with the compiler panic location in compiler/rustc_codegen_ssa/src/back/write.rs and the cached incremental object-file error. Done means the project compiles without the compiler panic or missing object-file failure.
