Description

rust-analyzer version: 2023-12-18

rustc version: 1.76

fn infer() -> _ {
    "hi"
}

image
Has the correct code action (3) but if we choose 2 we get

fn infer() -> &str {
    "hi"
}

which doesn't compile.

Research direction

Reproduce the issue with the shown fn infer() -> _ example and compare the available code actions, especially the one producing &str. Trace the code action that inserts the inferred return type; done means selecting it produces valid Rust that compiles instead of &str.
