Description

Issue by cmr

For earlier discussion, see https://github.com/rust-lang/rust/issues/13372

This issue was labelled with: A-an-interesting-project, A-diagnostics, A-lint, A-resolve in the Rust repository

Our shadowing behavior can be somewhat surprising, especially around method lookup. A lint (allow by default) for name shadows would be incredibly useful.

Research direction

Start by reading the earlier discussion in Rust issue 13372 and reviewing the A-diagnostics, A-lint, and A-resolve labels for context. Define the scope of shadowed-name detection, particularly around method lookup, and consider the work complete when an allow-by-default lint reports the intended surprising shadowing cases.
