Description
(from https://github.com/rust-lang/rust/issues/31509)
It would be nice to in addition to specifying linkage, specify visibility. I think a similar syntax could be used:
extern {
#[visibility="protected"]
static myvar: u32;
}

Research direction
Start by reading the linked Rust issue 31509 and the LLVM visibility-styles documentation. Compare the proposed #[visibility="protected"] syntax with the existing linkage approach, then define the syntax and semantics needed for an RFC; done means the proposal has an agreed design.
