Description

We currently only can do garbage collection at the granularity of rewrite steps. It would be nice to be able to do it more frequently, to handle large function evaluations where it's not working with very much live memory.

Research direction

Start by examining how garbage collection is currently tied to rewrite steps in the LLVM backend. Define and investigate a finer collection granularity for large function evaluations, with completion demonstrated by collection occurring more frequently without requiring excessive live memory.
