Description
@kevinushey - We messaged previously around the difficulties of packrat in a windows environment and this being in a large part down to the requirement of building from source for old packages.
Just flagging (you probably already know) about the crandb project. It seems like there is already an operational api for cran metadata that you can use to identify at what date a particular package version is from. Is there any plan to use this say in conjunction with MRAN snapshots to solve the binary problem? Or even better is it possible in the packages current format?
Regards,
Adam

Research direction
Start by reviewing Packrat's current package format alongside the crandb API and MRAN snapshot approach mentioned in the issue. The issue does not name files, tests, or acceptance criteria; a concrete binary-support design and definition of done would be needed before implementation can begin.
