Use of @author does not use \and in LaTeX rendering

Description
I expected @author["Alice" "Bob"] to be rendered to something like \author{Alice \and Bob} but it gets rendered to \author{Alice\hspace*{\fill}\\and Bob}. Wouldn't it be nicer to use LaTeX's facility for multiple authors instead of the aforementioned code?
