Research direction
Start by locating the implementation and tests for the ~? and ~or* forms; these are the only entry points named in the issue. Compare their behavior in the multiple-template case and determine the expected handling for more than two templates. Done means ~? accepts the expanded template count consistently with ~or*, with coverage for the new cases.
