Currently, we just don't report checkpoints from the merged splits.

Research direction
Start in the merge executor at the checkpoint_delta: CheckpointDelta::default() TODO shown in the issue. Trace how checkpoints are produced by merged splits and how the executor reports them; done means checkpoints from merged splits are reported instead of being discarded.
