Research direction
Start with the integration test ingest_test::test_indexing_directory_cleanup and reproduce the behavior on current main. Trace the handling of the /indexing directory after an index is deleted; done means the index's working files are removed within a few seconds rather than remaining after approximately 100 seconds.
