Description

Whenever possible, let's make those RPCs in a fire-and-forget fashion. We should wrap the RPCs with a timeout when the response output is necessary, otherwise, we risk hogging the control plane "event loop".

Research direction

Start by locating the control-plane RPCs to the indexers, ingesters, and metastore; the issue names no files or tests. Determine which calls require response output and which can be fire-and-forget. Done means necessary responses are timeout-wrapped and nonessential calls no longer risk hogging the control-plane event loop.
