Research direction
Start at src/_pytest/cacheprovider.py lines 480-481, where the current tox-environment cache separation is implemented. Compare the requested session types—tox, nox, hatch, and virtualenvwrapper—and define how cache separation should recognize them. Done means the behavior is no longer a hack tied only to tox and handles the intended session types consistently.
