Description
I am trying to understand the internals of how the slaves execute the tests. So I am currently unable to understand this line of code https://github.com/pytest-dev/pytest-xdist/blob/master/xdist/remote.py#L60 . Why do we need at least 2 items in a session for the tests to execute.

Research direction
Start with xdist/remote.py around line 60 and trace how SlaveInteractor executes tests and handles the session item count. Identify the reason for the minimum of two items, then document that explanation in the issue or an appropriate project reference so the behavior is clear.
