Research direction
Start by reproducing the reported pytest --dist load -n 1 command with pytest-xdist 3.6.1 and pytest 8.3.3, then trace where worker processes are created. Determine whether five Python processes with one requested worker is expected; if not, identify the behavior to correct and verify it with a focused test.
