Description

I've searched everywhere but couldn't find a way to template files being packaged, e.g. to introduce a version, a date or other metadata into a document or other text files. It could look like data_files with one additional parameter representing a dictionary from placeholder to values.

Research direction

The issue names no files, tests, or entry points, so begin by locating the packaging path that handles data_files in Setuptools. Define how a placeholder-to-value dictionary should be supplied and how templated text files are distinguished from ordinary packaged files. Done means the behavior is documented and covered for version, date, or other metadata substitution.
