Description
I'm opening this issue for discussion really.
I stumbled on autoray (Github) by @jcmgray which provides an abstract interface to a number of array types.
What struck me was the very general lazy compute system. This opens up the possibility of lazy-but-not-dask computation.

Research direction
Start by reading autoray's lazy computation documentation and the related xarray issues #2298, #1725, and #5081. This issue is discussion-only, so work is not defined until the project agrees on an integration scope and concrete completion criteria.
