Description

This seems to be coming up quite a bit for wrapping functions that apply an operation along an axis, e.g., for interpolate in #1640 or rank in #1733.

We should either write a utility function to do this or consider adding an option to apply_ufunc.

Research direction

Start by reviewing apply_ufunc and the related interpolate and rank issues (#1640 and #1733) to understand the repeated dimension-order problem. Done means agreeing on and implementing either a utility or an apply_ufunc option that restores the original dimension order.
