Issue/Bug Description:
This has come up a few times and is a hard one to pinpoint. I tried to assist some people on Reddit as well but to no avail.
Basically, i'm running a Predator Helios 300 laptop - NVIDIA GTX1050 Ti. I have the laptop in clamshell mode and use an external monitor.
The issue is, if I switch the on button and then close the lid, the external screen will not be detected and there is no way to get the Laptop screen to work again. You cannot access the terminal or to be frank, display anything. I am certain the system is running but without a display. I have to use REISUB to get the computer to restart.
What I have to do, is boot with the lid open, log in and then all is ok and I can close the lid. It did happen occasionally that from a lock screen the monitor will enter power save mode and again, the same issue. The black screen of nothingness.
Also happens on restarts.
I did have a fresh install recently but happened on the previous version also. I have no dual boot, pop only.
Steps to reproduce (if you know):
- Plug in external monitor
- Switch laptop on and immediately close
- 60% of the time, you will not get anything on either screen after a few seconds
Expected behaviour:
As Above

Research direction
Start by reproducing the issue on Pop!_OS 20.04 with the reported Predator Helios 300, NVIDIA GTX 1050 Ti, external monitor, and clamshell boot sequence. Compare booting with the lid open versus closed, including the lock-screen and restart cases; done means both displays remain usable when the lid is closed at boot or after locking.
