Research direction

Start by reviewing the go.Splom implementation and the feature discussion in plotly/plotly_express#42. Clarify how diagonals should appear and what behavior is expected before locating the relevant implementation and tests. Done means the requested diagonal behavior is implemented and covered by appropriate tests.
