Description

An axis title that is drawn to fit inside the space between axis tick labels will not be pushed outwards correctly when tick redraws (through zooming in the plot, scrolling the axis up and down) cause an overlap.

  • To reproduce: See this CodePen and either zoom in on the plot or grab and drag the axis to create overlap between the axis tick labels and axis title.
  • Temporary workaround: Set layout.yaxis.automargin=true and layout.yaxis.title.standoff=0 to force the axis title to be drawn outwards from the tick labels.

Research direction

Start with the linked CodePen reproduction and trace the axis tick redraw behavior triggered by zooming or dragging the axis. Check how the axis title is positioned relative to tick labels during those updates. Done means the title no longer overlaps the tick labels after zooming or scrolling, without requiring the documented workaround.
