Description

Reproducible example: https://codepen.io/tcummin2/pen/oNYdxqO?editors=0010
Console errors are thrown when you hover over the 2nd point because plotly is trying to call string.replace on an array instead of a string.

Research direction

Start by running the reproducible CodePen example linked in the issue and hover over the second point to observe the console error. Trace the hovertemplate handling that attempts to call string.replace on an array; done means the example no longer throws a console error for an empty-string array entry.
