Description

The Makefile script doesn't use $PREFIX when I use make install, instead, it tries to install on /usr/local/.

It seems it can be fixed changing ac_default_prefix in configure to ${PREFIX:-/usr/local}.

Research direction

Start by reading the Makefile and configure script, then run make install with PREFIX set to reproduce the installation path. Update the configure prefix handling so PREFIX is honored, and verify that installation targets use the requested prefix instead of /usr/local.
