Description

Since the limit was set in 2018 (cbedf8781ac366980ddfdf2cd3450a0fd46e3355) and the osm data has nearly doubled from 84GB in 2020 to 152GB in 2025 I would like to discuss whether it would be useful to increase the maximum allowable limit.

Research direction

Start by locating the limit introduced in commit cbedf8781ac366980ddfdf2cd3450a0fd46e3355 and the code enforcing the maximum .pbf size. Determine whether the limit can safely increase for current OSM data, then document the required change and validation for the proposed new maximum.
