Description

Currently, some of the sharding code is patched out, it would be great to make multi-device models work. Unfortunately I currently only have one card so I can't test this at the moment.

Research direction

The issue names no files, tests, or entry points. Start by locating the sharding code that is currently patched out and tracing how models are placed across devices; determine how multi-device behavior can be exercised without the reporter's hardware. Done means multi-device models work and the behavior is covered by a reproducible validation path.
