Description

Implement some of the work detailed in RFD 242.

This could start with an "easy to run" test that creates some volumes and does IO to them.
Eventually, we want automated tests that report result, generate pretty graphs, and solve world hunger.
We can start small though, and work our way toward the full picture.

Research direction

Start by reading RFD 242 and locating existing volume and I/O test entry points in the repository. The first milestone described here is an easy-to-run test that creates volumes and performs I/O; completion should include a reproducible test, while graphs and broader automation remain future scope.
