Research direction

Start by tracing how renderd selects its configuration path after ./configure --prefix=/usr/local. Compare the path it tries, /etc/renderd.conf, with the installed /usr/local/etc/renderd.conf. Done means renderd uses the configured prefix and can open the installed configuration.
